Are fairy cakes the same as cupcakes?

Are fairy cakes the same as cupcakes? There seem to be different schools of thought on this subject.

There is one school of thought that says the difference between a fairy cake and a cupcake is in the origin of the name. The name 'cupcake' originating from the USA whilst the name 'fairy cake' originating from the UK. This school of thought would argue that the ingredients of both the fairy cake and the cupcake are the same.

In contract, there is an alternative school of thought that says there is a fundamental difference in the ingredients of a cupcake and a fairy cake. The cupcake ingredients and recipe resulting in a much richer and denser cake. Whilst the fairy cake ingredients and recipe resulting in a lighter and airier cake.

Finally, there is the school of thought that says the difference is in size alone. The fairy cake is a smaller version of the cupcake - the term fairy linked to elf, pixie, etc.

Despite all these difference schools of thought, there is no denying the wide variety of cupcake sprinkles and cupcake decorations available to decorate these wonderful little cakes. The world of paper cases has also evolved into cupcake wrappers. Cupcake wrappers are placed around the cupcake (after it has been baked) as a decorative feature.
