7 top tips for decorating birthday cupcakes

Posted by Jo Shaw on

Are you thinking about making some delicious cupcakes for your child’s birthday? Here are some decorative ideas that will make your cupcakes look absolutely irresistible.

  1. Use cupcake toppers to decorate your cupcakes

  2. Cupcake toppers come in a wide range of different styles, shapes, and sizes. You can buy birthday cupcake toppers for girls that are fully personalised and in their favourite colour with a clear birthday message.

You can also get birthday boy cupcake decorations that are also available in a wide range of different colours. It’s your choice what the message says and they can be fully custom written.

Cupcake toppers can either fit in the cake standing up or they can be placed on top of the fondant. The toppers that stand up have a small piece that is inserted into the cake sponge. The toppers can either be completely edible and may be made of hard icing or sugar paper. Alternatively, they may need to be removed and can be purely for decorative purposes.

Here's some examples of edible cupcake toppers available from Just Bake:

  3. Icing sugar can be used as a decoration

  4. Icing sugar can be sprinkled onto birthday cupcakes for an extra covering of sweet flavour. It provides a gentle, subtle sugary taste that isn’t quite as strong as something like buttercream icing.

  5. Add a creamy centre

  6. You can consider adding cream or butter icing into the inside of the cupcake. To do this, you need to cut a section in the middle of the top of the cupcake. Fill the hole and then replace the cutout piece of sponge. You can then add icing on top to conceal it so the delicious filling is a complete surprise.

Alternatively, you can leave the sponge off and instead fill the hole in the centre until it’s overflowing with frosting.

  7. Use sweets and treats as a decoration

  8. You can think about adding different sweets or chocolate treats into the icing. If you're using hard icing make sure that these are added before the cakes are refrigerated to ensure they are firmly embedded. These can also be added to butter icing decorations for some extra flavours that are sure to go down a treat.

  9. Decorate your cupcakes with a buttercream rose

  10. One of the easiest ways to make your cupcake look elegant and beautiful is with a buttercream rose design. All you need for this is an icing bag with a closed star tip. You can find these from various shops. Once you have this, you can then make a spiral from the inside to the outer edge of the cupcake. Make sure you test this on waxed paper first.

  11. Pom poms make a fun decoration

  12. With a round icing tip as well as an icing bag with the corner cut off you can create frosting circles. You can choose the sizes of these and they look rather wonderful. You can also add sprinkles to bring a little more colour to the design.

  13. Sprinkle dipped cupcakes look awesome

Finally, since we mentioned sprinkles, you might want to try this option. Here, all you need to do is add the buttercream to your cupcakes. Just make sure that the top of the cupcakes are completely covered and then dip them into a bowl filled with sprinkles. Tidy the edges for delicious cupcakes with a satisfying crunch.
